Forces of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) were seen in the strategically located Yemeni island of Socotra on Monday, two days after they deposed the island's governor and drove out the forces of the Saudi-backed government.
Exclusive footage from the Arabian Sea island shows STC forces in front of a government building and STC flags painted on the side of a building. Footage also shows STC vehicles moving around the island, which is located in a shipping lane connecting Asia to Europe via the Red Sea and Suez canal.
On Monday, the STC and the Yemeni government agreed to a ceasefire in the Abyan Governorate, and to hold a meeting on implementing a 2019 Riyadh agreement engaging committees from both sides.
Tensions between the former allies had been growing since April 25, when the STC declared self-rule in southern Yemen.
