Yemen’s Houthi rebels said they had handed over 22 children to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) during a press conference in Sanaa on Thursday. UNICEF confirmed to Ruptly that the children had been released and reunited with their parents. “UNICEF is pleased that 22 children are being released. We are working with our partners on... Еще the ground to ensure support to those children”, UNICEF Representative Dr Meritxell Relano said. Footage shows the released children embracing family members following the handover. UNICEF and ICRC representatives also attended the event, which was held at Sheba hotel in the Houthi-controlled capital of Sanaa. «Thank god for our release. We thank god, and we are grateful for this reception. We thank everyone», said one of the liberated children. The children had been captured during fighting on various fronts. A UN report revealed that there over 800 children were used as child soldiers in Yemen last year, with about 530 of those being recruited by the Houthis.
