Venezuela: Voting underway in mayoral elections boycotted by opposition

Voting began in Caracas in the early hours of Sunday morning for the Venezuelan mayoral elections, which are expected to deliver a healthy majority for President Nicolas Maduro’s ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela ahead of next year’s presidential elections. Voters will choose mayors in 335 municipalities nationwide, and a governor in the state of Zulia, after the previous winning... Еще candidate refused to swear loyalty to the new pro-government legislative body. The major parties in the opposition Democratic Unity coalition refused to participate in the elections, although some minor parties have chosen to stand. A high abstention rate is anticipated as voters stay away from Venezuela’s third election in six months.
