The Chinese consulate in San Francisco, seen in the footage on Thursday, is being accused by the FBI of harbouring a biology researcher charged with VISA fraud and wanted by the federal authorities.
Juan Tang allegedly lied about her ties to the Chinese military in order to receive a US visa and according to a government court filing dated Monday, «at some point following the search and interview of Tang on June 20, 2020, Tang went to the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco, where the FBI assesses she has remained.»
Visa fraud could carry a penalty of 10 years in prison.
US prosecutors said that the San Francisco case appears to be part of a program conducted by the Chinese army to send military scientists to the United States on false pretenses.
The news comes at a time of increased tension between the two countries. On Tuesday, Washington ordered Beijing to close its Houston consulate in order to «protect American intellectual property and the private information of its citizens.»
