USA: US conditions for nuclear weapons use 'can lead to serious security consequences' — Russian DM

The United States’ decision to increase its missile defence capabilities is «creating conditions for the use of nuclear weapons with minimal costs,» stated the Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson Alexander Emelyanov, during a joint Russian-Chinese briefing on missile defence on the sidelines of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, in New York, Thursday. Emelyanov said that the US... Еще conducted a «large-scale deployment of mobile stationery missile defence systems» when the country signed the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty with the Soviet Union in 1972. Although the US withdrew from the arms control treaty in 2002, it left «elements of the West’s missile defence system in the continental part of the United States, in Europe, and in the Asian Pacific region,» along with «military interception means are deployed close to the coast of Russia and China.» The Defence Ministry spokesperson pointed out that such arms deployment was conducted «long before» the US-North Korean tensions escalated, and stressed that «the deployment of a global missile defence system consistently destroys the existing system of international security.» Emelyanov went on to say that «by increasing the missile defence capabilities, the United States aim to get a strategic advantage by creating conditions for the use of nuclear weapons with minimal costs, which can lead to serious security consequences.»
