Terry Moran: «So is that a threat hanging over the Democrats?»
Donald Trump: «I'd never threaten anybody, but I am allowed to do that, yes.»
US President Donald Trump confirmed he said that the government shutdown could last months or years, until the border wall issue is resolved, at a press conference on the White House Lawn in Washington DC, Friday.
Trump emphasised that the Southern... Еще border issue, where Trump wants a wall constructed, is a more pressing priority for his administration than resolving the impasse of government. «We won't be opening until it's solved. We think this is a much bigger problem. The border is a much more dangerous problem, it's a much bigger problem. It's a problem of national security,» he noted.
When asked if he considered using emergency powers to bypass the congress, Trump affirmed «absolutely we can call a national emergency because of the security of our country.» He quickly followed up, saying «I haven't done it. I may do it. We can call a national emergency and build it very quickly.»
Trump made the comments after holding a meeting at the White House with congressional leaders to find the funding for border security, which would lead to the reopening of the US government. According to reports, as no deal had been reached in the discussions, the sides agreed to meet again over the weekend to work on the issues.
The US government has been partially shutdown for 14 days, since Trump refused to sign a funding bill that didn't include US$5 billion (€4.4 billion) in funding for the border wall — a figure Democrats in control of the House of Representatives have refused to consider.
