US civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton paid tributes to the late Congressman John Lewis who passed away on Friday at the age of 80.
Sharpton was speaking at a ceremony marking the sixth anniversary of the death of Eric Garner at the hands of police in New York City on Saturday.
«John Lewis changed this country without showing hate or rancor. He suffered on his body. He bared the wounds of the movement. He was a Freedom Rider,» said Sharpton.
He stressed that Lewis was the successor to Martin Luther King in the fight for racial equality.
