USA: Thousands decry migrant centres at largest border crossing with Mexico

Thousands of people marched up San Ysidro Land Port of Entry, which is the largest border crossing into Mexico, on Saturday, as part of a nationwide protest against inhumane conditions in migrant detention centres. The protesters exhibited numerous placards denouncing the centres, as well as family separation. One of the organisers of the march, Christian Ramirez, said, «These camps have proven... Еще that they are in clear violation of any standards in international law. In fact, it is a few days ago that the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations condemned the conditions in which children and adults are being held in detention facilities.» «The fact that there are children who are dying, the fact that there's rampant cases of abuse, including sexual abuse against minors — is a wake up call that we need a dramatic shift in the way that the immigration policy should be handled in this country,» he added. Thousands of people took part in protests across the US, as demonstrators call for closure of migrant detention centres. The treatment of migrants in the detention centres — particularly child migrants — has come under fire in recent months, with reports emerging of squalid conditions and cruelty from staff. Members of Congress such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez testified to the House Oversight and Reform Committee yesterday that detainees face abuse and inhumane conditions.
