USA: Russia’s ambassador heckled by gay rights campaigner in maiden speech

Russia’s Ambassador to the USA Anatoli Antonov was heckled by a gay rights campaigner in San Francisco on Wednesday during his first official speech in his new role. As the ambassador was welcomed on stage and he started telling the crowd he was not a magician, a man appeared at the side of stage with a rainbow flag and banner demanding action over gay men in Chechnya. The man was calmly... Еще shepherded from the auditorium. Antonov went on to reveal how members of Congress do not want to speak to him or his colleagues and relations between the two countries are still politicised and abused. He said: “Russia is being groundlessly accused of meddling in to the US elections, as well of other domestic and external problems of the United States. The expulsion of Russian diplomats, seizure and search of our diplomatic property, along with the removal of the state flags of the Russian Federation, infringement of the rights of the Russian media, all these hostile actions are destroying the foundations of the Russian-American cooperation.” He went on to strike a more conciliatory tone telling the audience: «We suggest our American counterparts to resume a functional dialogue between our security councils, defence agencies, intelligence services, members of our parliaments.”
