United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appealed to the United Nations Security Council at a virtual meeting on Tuesday to extend its arms embargo against Iran, warning that letting it expire would betray the UN's «finest ideals.»
«Iran is not a responsible democracy like Australia or India. We already know that Tehran will do, if given the ability to buy more weaponry,» Pompeo said.
He added that the UN had an imperative to «protect human life» through its ability to lengthen the embargo, which is due to expire in October.
Tensions between the United States and Iran reached new highs in January when US President Donald Trump approved a drone strike that killed Iranian general Qasem Soleimani.
