USA: Pence expresses sympathy over 'terrible event' in Guatemala

US Vice President Mike Pence offered his 'deepest sympathies' to Guatemala at a reception for the Organisation of American States in Washington DC on Monday, following a devastating volcanic eruption the previous day. «Our hearts are with the people of Guatemala, our hearts are with all of those that are suffering in the wake of this terrible event,» Pence said. «To Foreign Minister [Sandra... Еще] Jovel, please know tonight that your country and your people are on our hearts and in our prayers.» Medical centres in the Escuintla Department of Guatemala were overwhelmed with injured people after the Fuego volcano's eruption resulted in at least 62 deaths with as many as 3,200 people being evacuated. Fuego — which means 'fire' in Spanish — spewed a stream of lava and emitted a huge cloud of black smoke and ash which rained onto the capital, Guatemala City, some 40km (25 miles) away.
