USA: NYC 'peaceful protest' unravels into vandalism and looting

Thousands of protesters marched peacefully through Manhattan from Times Square to Foley Square in New York during the daylight on Sunday to decry the killing of George Floyd. A group of protesters were filmed creating a human chain to protect the police officers while repeating «It's a peaceful protest.» «I insist on you not attacking the police officers here,» one of the protesters addressed the crowd. However, in the late hours of Sunday, the protest turned violent with numerous shops being looted and vandalised. Looters could be seen smashing windows, stealing items and setting rubbish containers alight. One protester accused the police of «using their batons,» and said she was pepper sprayed. Floyd, a Houston native, died in Minneapolis on May 25 after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as he was recorded saying, «I can't breathe» and «Don't kill me.» Four officers involved in the incident have since been fired. The officer who knelt on Floyd was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.
