Paul Manafort's attorney, Kevin Downing, spoke briefly to press in Washington DC on Monday following his client's hearing, calling the charges of collision with Russia that have been made against him «ridiculous».
«There is no evidence that Mr. Manafort or the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government,» outlined Downing in the beginning of his statement.
«Mr. Manafort represented pro... Еще-European Union campaigns for the Ukrainians and, in that, he was seeking to further democracy and to help the Ukraine come closer to the United States and the EU. Those activities ended in 2014, over two years before Mr. Manafort served in the Trump campaign. Today, you've seen an indictment brought by an office of special counsel that is using a very novel theory to prosecute Mr. Manafort regarding a FARA filing,» he went on to say.
The lawyer noted that U.S. government had pressed Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) — related charges «six times since 1966» which «only resulted in one conviction.»
Downing left immediately after finishing his statement, declining to answer any questions.
The charges against Manafort include conspiracy against the US, conspiracy to launder money, acting as an unregistered foreign agent, as well as counts related to failing to file reports for foreign bank accounts.
