USA: Iran can either change course or 'see its economy crumble' — Pompeo

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo implored the Islamic Republic of Iran to change course and “alter” their behaviour while speaking to the press in Washington DC on Monday, just after the sanctions lifted under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or Iran nuclear deal, were fully reinstated. “The Iranian regime has a choice: it can either do a 180 degree turn from its outlaw course of... Еще action, and act like a normal country, or it can see its economy crumble,” Pompeo said, adding that Washington “will be relentless on exerting pressure on the regime.” Pompeo noted that the sanctions were part of US President Donald Trump’s strategy to “fundamentally alter the behaviour” of the Iranian government, including their alleged funding of “violent and destabilising activities” throughout the Middle East and the world. Pompeo also threatened any company that continued to secretly do business with Iran would be levied with “swift, severe penalties.” Pompeo noted that certain temporary allotments would be issued to certain countries as they wean themselves off Iranian oil supplies “to ensure a well-supplied oil market,” namely China, India, Italy, Greece, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey. In addition, temporary exceptions were made to allow the continuation of nuclear production at three Iranian facilities to improve oversight of the Iran nuclear program. “Rest assured, Iran will never come close to getting a nuclear weapon on President Trump's watch,” Pompeo concluded.
