US President Donald Trump told European nations to take back their citizens who were caught fighting for the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL), threatening to «drop them right on your border» if they did not do so, during a press conference in Washington DC, Sunday.
«European nations have been a tremendous disappointment,» he said. «I actually said to them, you don't take... Еще them [captured IS fighters], I'm going to drop them right on your border and you can have fun capturing them again. But the United States taxpayer is not going to pay for the next 50 years — you see what Guantanamo costs — we're not going to pay tens of billions of dollars because we were good enough to capture people that want to go back.»
Trump had just announced Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of IS, had been killed in an operation led by US special forces in Syria, amid a Turkish military operation on the Syrian border which has reportedly led to hundreds of IS fighters and family members to escape captivity.
According to Trump's announcement, Baghdadi blew himself up with an explosives vest, after reaching a dead-end tunnel while attempting to flee.
