USA: Hundreds camp outside NY City Hall to demand $1bn cut from NYPD budget

Hundreds of activists were camping outside New York City Hall on late Wednesday, demanding at least $1 billion (€890.6 billion) in funding cuts to New York City Police Department (NYPD) ahead of the city's July 1 budget deadline. Protesters were carrying 'Black Lives Matter' and 'Defund the police' banners, with many occupying the grassy area outside the building with their towels, plaids and sleeping bags. A protester, Helen Edwardes, said she hopes that «defunding the police will bring up more economic equality, more opportunities to communities and create equity.» «I would like to see more than $1 billion but $1 billion is a start and this is all is going to take time and ultimately all that money is going to be put back into the communities,» she added. Another protester, Jeremiah Trapp, called for the movement to keep its momentum going «until there is real change.» This is demonstrators' second night in a row outside City Hall, with many saying they will not leave until the NYPD's nearly $6 billion (€5.3 billion) budget is defunded and reinvested into the communities and state's needs.
