USA: Haley berates Human Rights Council as UN's 'greatest failure'

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley criticised the Human Rights Council as the UN's «greatest failure,» at a Heritage Foundation event in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. Haley argued that the Human Rights Council «has provided cover, not condemnation, for the world's most inhumane regimes.» She went on to say that the UN inter-governmental body «has been not a place of conscience, but... Еще a place of politics,» arguing that the Council «has focused its attention unfairly and relentlessly on Israel.» The US ambassador stressed that the Human Rights Council is the UN's «greatest failure» and that the institution «has fallen short of its promise.» Haley noted that despite the US withdrawal from the Council, «fixing the institutional flaws» of the Council will remain «one of our biggest priorities» at the UN. Washington announced the US exit from the UN Human Rights Council on June 19, following the Council's vote to probe killings of Palestinian protesters in Gaza. The move also followed criticism faced by Washington for detaining children separated from their migrant parents after entering the US from Mexico.
