Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov questioned the need for a new French initiative in Geneva on the Syrian peace process, when speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, on Thursday.
Gatilov explained that while Russia welcomes initiatives and the “revitalisation of the political process in Geneva”, there... Еще are certain existing formats already in place that are working effectively.
He stated that when an additional group is created, it is vital to identify what they will add to the talk process.
“We don’t know yet how the French are intending to develop their initiative further on. We are not rejecting anything, but as I said we would like to know what would be an additional input and how it can affect the intensification of the political process», he said.
EU High Representative Federica Mogherini and UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura also attended the high-level meeting on the Syrian crisis.
