USA: Further sanctions on N Korea could lead to more missile tests — Russia's UN rep

SOT, Vasili Nebenzia, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN (English): «Indeed yesterday, we had an extra ordinary Security Council meeting on the recent [nuclear] test and everybody and everybody strongly condemned it. It was indeed a flagrant violation of all previous Security Council resolutions on North Korea, including the latest one 2371, which is exactly one month old... Еще today. You know nobody I believe wants a military solution; everybody wants the crisis to be resolved peacefully. But the problem is that recipes for it differ, some countries like the United States, France, Japan, UK, South Korea and others say we need to impose a new set of sanctions on the DPRK to deprive them of the means to develop their nuclear ballistic missile test programme and to bring them back to the negotiating table.» Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Vasili Nebenzia stated that a “new set of sanctions maybe not an invitation to the negotiating table, but rather to new further [sic] tests.” He was speaking in New York City, Wednesday. Russia's UN representative stated that although «the United States, France, Japan, UK, South Korea and others say we need to impose a new set of sanctions on the DPRK,» he expressed support for a «political and diplomatic solution» and believes that sanctions could be counterproductive, resulting in further nuclear tests. «Nobody I believe wants a military solution; everybody wants the crisis to be resolved peacefully,» Nebenzia said. On Tuesday, at the emergency Security Council meeting, US UN envoy Nikki Haley called on the United Nations to impose the strongest possible diplomatic measures against the DPRK.
