Fulton County District Attorney Paul L. Howard announced charges brought against Garrett Rolfe, a former Atlanta police officer, for the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks, during a news conference at the Fulton County Superior Courthouse, on Wednesday.
«The first charge is felony murder. This is a death that is a result of an underlying felony, and in this case the underlying felony is aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and the possible sentence is for a felony murder conviction would be life, life without parole or the death penalty,» Howard said. «We've concluded at the time Mr Brooks was shot that he did not pose an immediate threat of death or serious physical injury to the officer or officers.»
Howard added that fellow police officer Devin Brosnan, who was also present during Brooks' fatal shooting «is now becoming a cooperating witness for the state.»
Brooks was shot by Rolfe on Friday, June 12, at a Wendy's restaurant in southeast Atlanta.
