USA: Economic declaration of war? State dept. says Russia 'certainly entitled to say that'

Certainly our relationship is at a low point, but we have to find areas of mutual cooperation.» QUESTION: «So he didn’t say that it is the end of cooperation; he said it is the end of any hope for improvement. I — we have seen a lot of leaders, a lot of countries say provocative things, and we may just need to settle things down a little bit”. QUESTION: «I’m just trying to establish the record. Was it an economic declaration of war on the Russian Federation?» SOT, Heather Nauert, US State Department Spokesperson (English): “I — if that is what Russia is saying, Russia is certainly entitled to say that, and that’s as far as I’m going to go. I’m not going to — I’m not going to take the bait on that.” When grilled over Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev’s statement that the US had opened «full-fledged economic war» against Russia during a press briefing in Washington DC, Thursday, State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said “if that is what Russia is saying, Russia is certainly entitled to say that.” Nauert stated that often international politicians could “say provocative things, and we may just need to settle things down a little bit.” When pressed on Medvedev’s comments, Nauert replied “if that is what Russia is saying, Russia is certainly entitled to say that, and that’s as far as I’m going to go. I’m not going to take the bait on that.” In late July, US Congress passed a bill that would impose new economic sanctions against Russia, targeting mining, defence, and shipping industries, among others. US President Donald Trump has since signed off on the legislation. In response, Moscow stated that the US must cut the number of diplomatic staff working in the country to 455 personnel by September 1, and halt their usage of summer houses and embassy storage facilities in Moscow by August 1.
