Democratic presidential candidates were barred entry into an immigration detention centre for child migrants in Homestead, Miami Dade County, on Friday as US President Donald Trump's immigration policies come into sharp focus ahead of the 2020 presidential race.
Footage shows the candidates walking into the main office of the Homestead Migrant Children Detention Facility, before being turned away... Еще and disallowed entry. Later they climbed on top of a ladder to get a view into the facility, which houses up to 3000 unaccompanied child migrants. Julian Castro, Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary called the situation «infuriating» as he expressed anguish over «what is happening with these children, because no child should be treated like this.»
The footage also shows children wearing orange caps walking inside the facility, as protesters gathered across from the building to demonstrate for its closure.
The Homestead Migrant Children Detention Facility is one of 168 operated in 23 states by the US Department of Health and Human Services and is reportedly the largest child detention centre in the United States for unaccompanied minors.
