The city of Richmond, following the order issued by Mayor Levar Stoney took down the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors statue on Wednesday.
Workers were seen removing the monument with locals watching.
American Civil War Museum Education Programs Manager, Joseph Rogers who was at the site said that «monuments to white supremacy» needed to be removed and social needs, like education, should be funded better.
«What we need to do is focus on schools, our homeless population, taking care of public housing, for one thing, keeping our communities intact, and then we can start building other things,» Rogers said.
The removal comes amid a debate over colonialism and racism spurred on by the deaths of Black Americans George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, Breonna Taylor, and others at the hands of the US police.
