USA: Clear backpacks introduced at high school after Parkland shooting

Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, site of the Parkland shooting that claimed seventeen lives and injured another seventeen others last February, were ordered to wear clear backpacks. The requirement has been in place since the students returned from Spring Break on 2nd April. The clear backpacks, which were donated to the school and handed out to students on Monday... Еще, are part of various other newly implemented security measures, including ID tags, specific points for school entry and continued police presence. The new measures are aimed at keeping the school safer after security breaches last month when two students were caught with knives and the brother of school shooter was arrested for trespassing on campus. Some students are sceptical, however, that the clear backpacks will actually make a difference. «I feel like the clear backpacks aren't really a real solution in the end because you could easily hide things in between folders or within smaller packages or like little bags,» said Christy Ma, a senior at Douglas. «I feel like the issue still pertains and the topic that's all over the news about gun reform and everything, that still needs to be addressed and discussed,» she added. Pam Scopino, mother of a student at Douglas and local substitute teacher, also agrees that the clear backpacks are not going to make the school safer. While the school board has not mandated metal detectors or wands, there is a possibility they may implement those in the near future at the school as well. «Unfortunately, I think this is the new normal,» Scopino said. «I don't want the schools to become a prison. They say it's going to be no different than going to a stadium, to an airport. It's going to take a lot more time. I don't know how they're going to work around that.»
