Right-wing protesters campaigning for the removal of murals, which they perceive to be honouring ‘communism’, were met by a group of left-wing activists who showed their support for the works of art, in San Diego’s Chicano Park, on Sunday. The anti-mural campaign comes soon after a movement to remove Confederate monuments spread across the country. Left-wing protesters organised a picnic in... Еще the park as a counter demonstration, displaying solidarity with the murals and defending them from what they decry as expressions of hatred and xenophobia. San Diego police officers kept the two opposing groups separated and ensured that the rally remained peaceful. «The two groups got together and we made sure that our police officers separated those two groups to make sure that it was peaceful. It remained peaceful,» said one local police officer. One left-wing demonstrator explained why a show of solidarity for the murals was important to her, «what they’re doing here is not right, and we came here to support that and show that our people over here in Chicano Park, they’re the real people.» Chicano Park's murals were erected in honour of the Chicano civil rights movement and in homage to Spanish, Mexican and Mexican-American cultures.
