California Governor Gavin Newsom has requested a Presidential Emergency Declaration from the White House following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake late on Friday.
Speaking at a press briefing in Mather in Sacramento County, Director of the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services Mark Ghilarducci noted that the emergency declaration had been requested from the White House «to support our... Еще operations here.»
According to Ghilarducci, the 7.1 magnitude earthquake «was felt widely throughout most of Southern California and even as far north here as Sacramento. The shaking intensity was very significant.»
He noted that there were «significant reports of fires, structure fires, mostly as a result of gas leaks or gas line breaks,» adding that there were «also reports of water main breaks, power is out, and communication is out to parts of the community.»
Friday's earthquake is believed to be the strongest to hit Southern California in 20 years, with the epicentre recorded near Ridgecrest. It followed a 6.4 magnitude temblor that hit the area on Thursday.
