The family of Daniel Prude released police body cam footage of Wednesday showing the 41-year-old African American suffocating to death while being taken into custody in Rochester, New York on March 23.
Prude was reportedly having a mental health episode when his brother Joe called the police for help. Prude was running naked in the street at night, when seven police officers arrived, covered his head with a hood and pressed his face onto the ground, as can be seen in footage released by the family's lawyers. He was found to be brain dead when he arrived at the hospital, where he died a week later on March 30.
Crowds gathered in Rochester and New York City's Time Square on Wednesday night to demonstrate against racism and police brutality following the release of the video. Similar protests have been taking place throughout the country since the death of George Floyd in May.
