His Juventus counterpart Massimiliano Allegri also refused to comment, saying «I don't want to go into these things, because they are personal. So I will respect that.» The 29-year-old, who was born in Gelsenkirchen, West Germany, was widely criticised for posing in a photograph alongside the Turkish President, with many questioning his loyalty to German 'values.' He retired from the German national team citing 'disrespect, insults and pressure.' Ozil's family hail from Devrek, although Mesut himself represented Germany on 92 occasions and was an integral figure in their 2014 World Cup win.
