USA: Animals saved from raging California wildfires

Animal rights activists were stocking pet food and opening kennels at Haven Humane Society's shelter in Redding on Monday, as the full impact of week-long raging wildfires begin to take effect. An emergency headquarters has been set up at Redding Municipal airport, with numerous helicopters on stand-by, ready to be deployed for aerial firefighting. A five year old, a four year old and their great-grandmother are amongst the latest victims. The fire fire also claimed the lives of a firefighter and bulldozer driver. Some 38,000 people were evacuated from the area, with up to 6,000 more homes at risk. The wildfire, referred to as Northern California Carr Fire by the media, started last Monday as the result of a vehicle mechanical failure, according to authorities.
