USA: Aerial firefighters battle rapidly growing, uncontained Glass Fire

Aerial firefighters battled the Glass Fire in St Helena, in California's Napa county on Monday, as it grew uncontrollably over the course of the day. The fire, which started on Sunday and remained 0 percent uncontained as of Monday evening, grew to over 36,000 acres (14,600 hectares) in under 48 hours, prompting mandatory evacuation orders in nearby towns. At least 21 residents have been treated in hospitals for burns and people have been left without power in Napa and Sonoma counties. Over 8,000 wildfires in California have burned more than 3.6 million acres (1.5 million hectares) of the state this year according to numbers issued by the local authorities, a record for the state which typically sees wildfires burning 300,000 acres (120,000 hectares) on an average year.
