USA: Activists camp on DC's Freedom Plaza to ask for defunding of police

The activist group Freedom Fighters DC set up an encampment at Freedom Plaza in Washington DC, to protest against the city council's proposed $18 million (€15 million) increase of the budget for the Metropolitan Police Department. The protest, which is due to last 36 hours according to the group members, takes place against the backdrop of increased calls for defunding or disbanding of police departments across the country, in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd. Anti-racism demonstrations have been taking place across the world following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis on May 25.
