US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hailed the deal reached last week between US President Donald Trump and Mexico to avoid tariffs, describing it as a «a significant win for the American people» while speaking to the press in Washington DC on Monday.
«Frankly, it reflects diplomacy at its finest. It shows the enduring strength too of the relationship between our two countries and it's a... Еще significant win for the American people,» Pompeo said.
Pompeo explained that Mexico agreed to deploy «6,000 Mexican National Guard along the Mexican southern border,» describing this as their «biggest effort to date.»
US President Donald Trump's administration had threatened to impose 5 percent tariffs on all Mexican goods if Mexico failed to reduce the number of migrants who arrive via its southern borders, travelling on to the US.
On Friday, Trump and Obrador reached a deal that would reportedly see the US not impose tariffs, which were due to take effect on Monday, in exchange for Mexico's strengthening enforcement at its border with Guatemala and expanding its policy of taking back migrants.
