Uruguay's iconic former President Jose 'Pepe' Mujica resigned from his post as a senator after officially retiring from politics in Montevideo on Tuesday.
The 85-year old Mujica told reporters that his decision had been hastened by the coronavirus pandemic, due to his age and his being affected by an immune disease. «I love politics but I love not dying even more,» Mujica shared with reporters.
«I have my fair share of defects. But in my garden I have not cultivated hate for decades. Because I learned a hard lesson that life gave me. Hate makes you stupid,» Mujica told Senators before they broke into applause.
During his time as Uruguayan president from 2010 to 2015, Mujica gave away almost all of his income to a social housing programme, earning himself the nickname of «poorest president in the world.»
