UN: Syrian envoy warns of ‘imminent danger of further escalation’ in Syria

The situation in Syria is still very unstable and a resurgence of violence could take place, said UN officials during a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York City on Wednesday. «We are alarmed by the rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation in northwest Syria and the tragic suffering of civilians. The ongoing offensive has displaced nearly 900,000 civilians since 1 December 2019... Еще, often multiple times. Hundreds have been killed during the same period,» said Geir Pedersen, UN Special Envoy for Syria. «Public statements from different porters, Syrian and international, suggest an imminent danger of further escalation,» he further added. His colleague Mark Lowcock, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, spoke of the cruelty of the situation, saying that bombing women and children living in horrible conditions in shelters was «cruel beyond belief» adding that it was «incumbent on all parties to protect these people.» The comments come on the same day that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that the two-day closed-door talks between Turkish and Russian officials aimed at de-escalation of tension in Syria's Idlib province had finished unsuccessfully.
