UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen called for a stabilisation of the situation in Idlib, warning it was necessary to avoid the risk of a «no-war-no-peace scenario.» Pedersen was addressing the Security Council via teleconference in New York from Geneva on Thursdsay.
He also claimed that a constitutional committee for Syria would not alone solve the conflict, adding, «It is now time for the... Еще Idlib situation to be stabilised and a nationwide ceasefire pursued. It is in fact past time to launch a constitutional committee. It is also time to try to develop a climate of confidence-building measures.»
For his part, US acting Ambassador to the UN Jonathan Cohen remarked that progress toward forming the new committee was «out of reach» and any progress in that direction had stalled.
Russian Deputy Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov said that the fight against terrorist organisations should continue, warning that «The Astana guarantors are determined to fully implement the agreements on stabilisation in Idlib.»
The UN Security Council was meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York to assess any progress on the political situation in Syria, where an armed conflict is ongoing since 2011 with more than 370,000 people killed and half of the population displaced.
