UN: Secretary Gen. Guterres pays tribute to former UN chief Javier Perez de Cuellar

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres paid tribute to his predecessor Javier Perez de Cuellar who passed away at the age of 100 on Wednesday. In a filmed message on United Nations TV, Guterres said the late Secretary-General «was an accomplished statesman, a committed diplomat and a personal inspiration who left a profound impact on the United Nations and our world.» «As Secretary... Еще-General, he played a major role in bringing peace and hope to trouble spots around the world,» Guterres said, offering his deepest condolences. «We remember and mourn the passing of a remarkable and compassionate global leader who left our world a far better place,» he added. Perez de Cuellar was born in 1920. He joined the Minister of Foreign Affairs in his native Peru in 1940 before holding a number of ambassadorships for his country in Switzerland, Poland, the Soviet Union and Venezuela. He was also appointed to senior UN roles in Cyprus and Afghanistan. His 10 years as head of the United Nations concluded in 1992 with the historic El Salvador peace accords which put an end to the civil war that had been going on in the country for more than a decade.
