UN: Peacekeepers should only use force ‘in self-defence and protection of mandate’ — Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that “force can be applied by blue helmets solely in self-defence and protection of the mandate,” in an address to the United Nations Security Council in New York City, Wednesday. Speaking on the fundamentals of peacekeeping operations, Lavrov stressed that «the principal position of Russia is that the regulation of all conflicts should be done by... Еще political means with reliance on national dialogue.» He added that «the creation of all the necessary conditions for that should be fundamental in all peacekeeping operations.» «Recently, so-called intelligence in peacekeeping [operations] has become a fashionable trend, actively promoted by the Secretariat and a support group of certain nations,” Lavrov noted. Lavrov also touched on the UN's experience strengthening peacekeeping missions in Mali and Congo, saying it «did not persuade us that the losses that peacekeepers suffered during military operations may be justified by the results achieved on the ground.» The council is taking place in the sidelines of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) which convenes representatives of all 193 United Nations Members States until September 25.
