UN: Palestinian rep. calls US reversal on Israeli settlements “sabotage” of peace process

Permanent Observer of State of Palestine to the United Nations Riyad H. Mansour said that the United States' change of approach to Israeli settlements in the West Bank is not aimed on achieving piece, and accused them of targeting the Palestinian people. His remarks were made during a UN Security Council session in New York City on Wednesday. «The US administration, once again, makes another... Еще illegal announcement on Israeli settlements in order to sabotage any chance to achieve peace, security and estability in our region and for our people. We strongly reject and comdemn this unlawful and irresponsible declaration,» he said. He went on to say that «one cannot believe that the American voice today is a voice that supports peace. It has become clear that this is a voice that incites against Palestinian people, that encourages Israel to continue with its illegal annexation of our land, to continue with its systematic violation of our rights.» Kelly Craft, Permanent Representative U.S. Mission to the United Nations, made a point of stressing that «the US government is expressing no view on the particular legal status of any individual settlement, nor are we addressing or prejudging the ultimate status of the West Bank. That is for Israelis and Palestinians to decide.» Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations Danny Danon thanked the United States for «clearly rejecting the false claim and historical lie that Israeli community in Judea and Samaria are inherently illegal under international law.» On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that US President Donald Trump's administration no longer recognises Israeli settlements as «inconsistent with international law.» Mandatory Credit: UNIFEED-UNTV Mandatory Credit: UNIFEED-UNTV
