«A new Aleppo must at all costs be prevented in Idlib,» said French Ambassador to the UN Francois Delattre, when speaking to the press ahead of a UN Security Council extraordinary meeting at the UN headquarters in New York City on Friday.
Delattre said, «we are extremely concerned about the violent escalation in the Idlib region. A new Aleppo must at all costs be prevented in Idlib. This is for... Еще us the number one priority, and this is the key message.»
He then warned that an escalation of the situation in the region might lead to «humanitarian catastrophe.»
Commenting on the situation in Idlib, German Ambassador to the UN Christoph Heusgen stressed that «there is only a political solution, and the military solution that apparently is being sought now is not a viable one.»
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 152,000 people are believed to have been displaced between April 29 and May 5 due to the intense fighting in northwest Syria.
