UN: Lavrov and Tillerson discuss Syria and Ukraine on UNGA sidelines

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson discussed communication between Russian and US militaries in Syria and the situation in Ukraine on the sidelines of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Tuesday. Lavrov said that despite the American coalition being an ”uninvited guest” he believed “it can be used in the fight against terrorism alongside... Еще the actions taken by the Syrian Army with our support, with the support of the Russian Air Force, which was officially invited by the legitimate government,” adding “I believe it is very pragmatic when all participants try to focus on the fight against IS.” Talking about the Russia’s suggestion to send UN Peacekeepers to protect the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Lavrov said that the “peacekeepers would only protect the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission and only when the observers are carrying out the functions listed in the Minsk Agreement. Any other role carried out by the peacekeeping mission would strike a line through these agreements, which I believe the Ukrainian side is attempting to do.” Representatives of all 193 UN member states gathered in New York City for the first day of the 72nd UNGA session. The gathering is set to continue until September 25.
