UN: Lavrov and Abbas discuss efforts for Palestinian reconciliation on UNGA sidelines

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed efforts for Palestinian reconciliation with President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Tuesday. Lavrov underlined that despite the problems in Syria, Iraq, Libya, and Yemen, «it is not acceptable to forget about the Palestinian issue,» adding «together with the majority of the UN... Еще members, we still stand firmly for the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution, for the implementation of the Arab Peace Initiative.» Abbas talked about Egypt’s efforts in the Palestinian reconciliation effort, saying “they offered us what we have requested. The dismantlement of the [Gaza] administrative committee, established by HAMAS and an agreement permit for the national accord, which was established in 2003, to work in the Gaza Sector, as well as the fact that we are going to participate in the elections.» They spoke about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and progress in talks between HAMAS and the Palestinian government. Representatives of all 193 UN member states gathered in New York City for the first day of the 72nd UNGA session. The gathering is set to continue until September 25.
