UN: Lavrov addresses UN peacekeeping meeting

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov gave a speech at a high-level meeting on peacekeeping dubbed 'Action for Peacekeeping' on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on Tuesday. Lavrov praised the efforts of UN peacekeepers over the last several decades, and said «we are ready to develop contacts in the field of peacekeeping between the UN and the Collective... Еще Security Treaty Organisation.» «The principles laid down in the document as a whole set the right vector for the development of peacekeeping activity. However, we cannot agree with certain provisions,» he added. Lavrov then specified some of his objections, saying: “First, it focuses on cooperation with civil society at the expense of interaction with host governments. Second is the desire to place secondary tasks that are uncharacteristic of peacekeeping in the centre of mandates, including in the field of human rights. There are specialised UN bodies for this subject, and, probably, one should not interfere with their competence.»
