UN: 'Cold War is back' — UN Secretary-General on Syria

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the Cold War is back, during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York on Friday. The members of the Security Council gathered to talk about the situation in the Middle East and particular Syria, in light of an alleged chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma. The Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily... Еще Nebenzya accused Washington of a “bellicose rhetoric” and stated that their sole interest is to oust the Syrian government. Nikki Haley, US Ambassador to UN, said that the US President hasn’t yet decided if he will take military action in Syria. She reconfirmed the US’s conviction that the Syrian government was behind an alleged chemical attack in Douma on April 7 and added that Bashar al-Assad has used chemicals 50 times on his people. The UK Ambassador deemed that it is «highly likely» that the Syrian government was behind the reported attack. Bashar Ja'afari, the Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the UN, rejected the accusations and said that if the US, UK and France undermine Syrian sovereignty, Syria will have to protect itself. «This is not a threat, this is a promise,» he added.
