UN: 'Clear' that 'Iran was responsible' for oil tanker attacks — US Amb.

The United States Acting Ambassador to the UN Jonathan Cohen reiterated accusations against Iran while denying the US drone downed on Thursday had entered Iranian airspace, during a statement at the UN headquarters in New York City on Monday. «It's clear to us, and it should be to the world that Iran was responsible for the May 12 and June 13 attacks against ships in the Persian Gulf,» Cohen said... Еще. «The coordinates of the drone’s flight path and location, which I shared with the Council, make clear that the aircraft at no point entered Iranian airspace,» he added, referring to the US surveillance drone which was shot down by Iran on Thursday. «Iran’s claims to the contrary are false and rely on an argument that the US aircraft was in Iran’s flight information region. But a country’s flight information region is not the same as their airspace.» The situation between Iran and the United States has been escalating since Iran announced in May that it would partially withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear deal which the Obama administration, Iran and the European Union signed in 2015 — the Trump administration withdrew from the deal in May 2018, re-imposing sanctions on Iran. German’s UN Ambassador Christoph Heusgen addressed the press following Cohen’s statement, urging restraint on behalf of the UK, France and Germany, who all stand by the JCPOA. «France, Germany, and the United Kingdom stress the commitment to the full implementation of Security Council resolution 2231 and the preservation of the JCPOA, which we believe contributes to reducing tensions in the region,» he said.
