UN: Chief warns weapons of mass destruction ‘gathering force’

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned the Security Council on Thursday that weapons of mass destruction are «gathering force». He warned that the Korean Peninsula is «the most tense and dangerous piece of security challenge in the world.» He went on to underline deteriorating relations between the United States and Russia on weapons of mass destruction referring to the Iranian nuclear... Еще deal and Syria. US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley named North Korea, Iran and Syria among the regimes that «most threaten the world today» with weapons of mass destruction. «They deny human rights and fundamental rights of their people, they promote conflict and regional instability, they aid terrorists and militant groups. They promote conflict that eventually spills over its borders.» She accused Russia of vetoing three Security Council resolutions and preventing the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (CWC) from holding Bashar Assad’s government responsible for the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria. «If the Russian government is serious about non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, it would convince its client, Assad, that he must eliminate his chemical weapons and cooperate fully with the OPCW and the United Nations,» she said. Russian Foreign Minister attending the meeting in turn warned US administration about Iran nuclear deal which failure could put the international security under threat. «We cannot for the benefit of political agendas of certain countries abandon a genuine achievement of international diplomacy,» he said.
