UN: «All sides must be willing to compromise» in Gaza handover to PA

The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, briefed the United Nations Security Council on Monday in New York City on the situation regarding the implementation of the October 12 Cairo agreement between Palestinian parties Fatah and Hamas. Mladenov, who is also Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO... Еще) and the Palestinian Authority (PA), called on “all sides” to “be willing to compromise” in the handover of Gaza to the PA. He cited numerous problems still hindering the daily lives of Gaza residents, and stressed donors’ necessity to improve the humanitarian situation on the ground and to see a realistic PA plan to administer the Gaza Strip. Mladenov condemned the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, as well as the construction of tunnels between Gaza and Israel. Regarding Lebanon and the resignation of its Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Mladenov stated that “the people of Lebanon have united behind President Aoun's call for Hariri to return,” and that “international statements of support for Lebanon's security, stability, sovereignty and independence have been issued at the highest levels.” All the major Palestinian factions, including Fatah and Hamas, will meet in Cairo on Tuesday for discussions about forming a unity government. Speaking from Paris on Saturday, Hariri said he will return to Lebanon for Wednesday’s Independence Day celebrations.
