Afghan President Ashraf Ghani praised US President Donald Trump's announced counter-terrorism strategy in South Asia, stressing that such claim has «renewed and redirected» Afghanistan's partnership with the US, at the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Wednesday. «With President Trump's recent announcement of his strategy to counter terror and stabilise South Asia, Afghanistan's... Еще enduring partnership with the United States and the international community has been renewed and redirected,» stated Ghani. « «We welcome this strategy, which has now set us on a pathway to certainty. The Afghan people have looked to the United States for this type of resolve for years,» he continued. The president then spoke of the current state of affairs within his country and said that «the Taliban and their backers cannot win militarily,» adding that peace can be reached «only through political settlement» and «intra-Afghan dialogue.» Lastly, Ghani touched on the issue of crimes against humanity, noting that they will «still occur with painful regularity.» The Afghan head of state called «shocking» the ethnic cleansing of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims, and condemned the country's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi's «lengthy silence» on the matter. Representatives of all 193 UN member states gathered in New York City for the first day of the 72nd UNGA session. The gathering is set to continue until September 25.
