Ukraine: Yanukovich treason case hearing postponed to October 25

Kiev's Obolonsky District Court has postponed until October 25 the hearing into the case against former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who stands accused of high treason, Thursday. Yanukovych's lawyer Maxim Gerasko reported that he had attempted to meet with Yanukovich at the address of his stay in the Russian city of Rostov on Don; however, he said «it was not possible to coordinate the... Еще legal position with Yanukovich Viktor Fedorovich, because based on the words of the guards at that time, he was temporarily not at this place.» The court decided to continue the consideration of the case, despite the fact that his lawyer Maxim Gerasko was reportedly unable to meet with the defendant and that, according to Gerasko, «until the legal position is agreed upon, it is impossible to continue the investigation of the evidence, since in that case, it would be a violation of the right of defence.» On November 28, 2016, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko charged Yanukovych in absentia, accusing the former president of «committing high treason, deliberate actions to change the borders of [Ukraine] in violation of the order established by the Constitution, [and] conducting an aggressive war.»
