At least three children have been killed and one more remains missing, in a fire at the Viktoria sports and recreation camp in Odessa, early on Saturday.
Firefighters were on the scene dealing with the blaze. The reported nearest source a water was some 1.2 km (0.7 miles) from the fire, as the fire reservoir in the camp was blocked. The heat of the fire has reportedly shattered glass and melted balconies of cottages nearby.
The camp is believed to have had 42 children present when the fire struck just after midnight. The vast majority of children were safely evacuated, with a number hospitalised from smoke inhalation and shock, while several more were injured when the jumped from the windows to escape the flames.
Father of one of the missing children, Igor, criticised the fire safety measures in place at the leisure camp. «These buildings, they are all completely violating the fire safety measures. There is no processing, nothing,» he said. «I cannot understand this. If my child is dead. I do not know, it will be horrible, for everyone.»
