Ukraine: Parliament approves December 25th as national holiday

The Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, adopted a bill recognising the 25th December, Christmas Day according to the Gregorian calendar, as a national holiday during a plenary session in Kiev, Thursday. During the heated debate, one of the MPs from the People's Union party, Victoriya Syumar, stated that «the disruption of today's vote is beneficial to Moscow,» and the bill «will lead... Еще Ukraine to the civilised and normal world.» Oleg Lyashko, leader of the Radical Party, called on his Rada colleagues to adopt the law in order not to «take the right of peasants to grow potatoes and unite the families.» In what Andriy Parubiy called «a great victory,» 238 lawmakers of parliament voted for the adoption of the law. Most Christians celebrate the 25th December according to the Gregorian calendar, while Eastern Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on 7th January.
